AFTER A RATHER LONG HIATUS OFF THE NIGERIAN MUSIC SCENE, D'BANJ HAS ANNOUNCED A RETURN WITH A NEW ALBUM. MANY ARE WONDERING WHAT THIS RETURN MAY MEAN FOR TODAY'S MAINSTREAM MUSIC. WE'VE MADE SOME PROJECTIONS BELOW.
Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo, Popularly known as D’banj represents a force that many believe mirrors that of the Nigerian Music Legend, Fela Kuti. D’banj was a one of the foremost acts in the modern Nigerian music industry to launch Afropop into international charts, notably with his 2012 “Oliver Twist”. Although D’banj took a break from active play in the mainstream Nigerian music Stage, he enjoyed respect through his years of break. Playing on the background and turning to Agro-business, he stringed on moves that kept him both relevant and visible in the entertainment scene. From an MTV recognition award to multiple brand endorsements to carefully executed relationship rumours.
D’banj, known for his fizzy energy on and off stage has been pointed out by many to be an excellent entertainer, this kept many longing for his return and active play in the mainstream entertainment sector. Early last year, he re-launched into local and international charts with a buzzing hit single, “Emergency”. This aroused excitement amongst his fans over his return, one that was quenched by the absence of news over any subsequent projects or releases other than the seeming afterthought single titled “Focus”, not much was heard from him after then.
Turning 37 today, the artiste surprised his fans with a handwritten tracklist release, announcing an upcoming album, “King Don Come”. Along with it came a video teaser of a single titled, “It’s Not A Lie” which features Harrysong and his former label mate Wande Coal. It has indeed been a year full of exciting news from the phenomenal singer-songwriter seeing as the news of him welcoming a new born is still fresh in our minds. We rejoice with him as we await an official release date for the album as well as news of any other projects or surprises.
The series of events that have trailed D’banj might make one wonder what his return means to Today’s Music Scene.
Considering that he has been in and out of picture for over 8 years, D’banj’s return could imply an exciting boost of energy into the buzzing music scene. With the likes of Wizkid, Teckno, Davido and Olamide currently shaking the industry in Africa and beyond, a resurgence of D’banj could mean a new dynamic, one which music lovers are looking out for with hanging breath. Hopefully, this should serve as a wakeup call for sleeping players in the industry and more competition. Knowing what energy and creativity D’banj wields, Africa and perhaps the world is sure in for an exciting ride. His return most likely would attract extra more international acclaim for Nigerian music. With an already established international appeal, this new project is bound to perhaps attract more international features, international tours and a new craze for Nigerian’s Afropop.
While we wait with fingers crossed for what this new project is to bring with it, enjoy the video teaser to “It’s Not A Lie ft Wande Coal and Harry Song”
