Over the past five years, there’s been many reports and stories about rape. Articles have been published, Tv programs have been aired, radio shows have been broadcast and so on. These were all done in a view to eradicate this demeaning misconduct among people. Celebrities, business owners and the everyday individual have all been dragged into this story one way or another and Africa is not left out. According to a report by Rapecrisis, nearly 27 South African women are raped daily. They also stated that men have also been reported to have been raped by other men and women.

Here is the truth

Nearly every woman has been sexually harassed/assaulted: I and a group of ladies were in a conversation very recently and 9 out of 10 of them said they had been sexually harassed, and the one who said she has never been was the youngest, 15 years old. Due to her age I had to take her home and while in a conversation with her mother I realized that they didn’t have a house help and relatives living with them because the young lady had been harassed multiple times. Of the 9 who said they had been sexually harassed, 6 had been raped.

People are becoming more informed about the subject: I always wondered why it takes ladies a very long time to report rape incidents but the truth is that no one wants to be known as “the rape victim” but thanks to the #MeToo movement and many others around the world, many ladies have been able to come out and have their rapist convicted. This takes a lot of courage and I commend those who do because this crime shouldn’t go unpunished.

Eroding rape culture: rape culture includes blaming of victims, trivializing of sexual assault, sexually explicit jokes, tolerance of sexual harassment, inflating false rape report statistics, publicly scrutinizing a victim’s dress, mental state, motives, and history, defining “manhood” as dominant and sexually aggressive etc. In many African cities, this culture is gradually being eroded as we take conscious efforts to make our cities safe for women, children and men to live in.

Gentlemen don’t rape women, successful men don’t rape women; only immoral cretinous degenerates do.
