Before now, any conversation around putting money in some virtual account or making payments virtually – over the internet or something, would have been met by a brick wall and a huge number of deaf ears. The conversation would have been dismissed – Africans loved their cash liquid as there has been stories of insecurity and money losses due to poor technology and other software related issues.

Well, the story today is nearly the exact opposite as everyone is becoming more mobile money savvy. In 2017, the GSM Association 2018 report states that over half of all mobile money services in the world are in Sub-Saharan Africa – this remains the fastest-growing mobile market in the world and is expected to have 500-million cellphone subscribers by 2020.

Also, the World Bank’s Global Findex Database in its financial inclusion survey found 21% of adults in Sub-Saharan Africa now have a mobile money account. This is considerably the highest in the world.

Major players like MPesa, Piggy bank, Alat, Paypal, have utterly disrupted the African mindset towards mobile money and have earned trust amongst communities. Which is why there is a vast number of service offerings that’s powering the sweep of mobile money with the shores of the continent.

So with these few points of mine, I hope I have been able to convince you and not to confuse you, by making you understand that the world would literally leave you behind if you are not mobile money acquainted.

Comfy Pay

HAVE YOU NOTICED THAT AFRICANS HAVE BEGUN TO GET VERY COMFORTABLE WITH ONLINE PAYMENTS?

I remember that not very long ago, if one wanted to purchase something and it is heard that that commodity is available and you want to purchase online, you will be discouraged from doing so, but right now, Africans are beginning to see this option as friendly, comfy, and trendy. No time to stress over something you can do at the click of buttons. Little wonder why online financial solutions platforms are making so much bucks.

However, there are still many amongst us who prefer the old fashion way, so old fashioned they fancy carrying cash around. They just want to know that they are solely in charge of their earnings.

One major driver of this trend is the large internet and mobile penetration in Africa. This has seen well over 50% of Africans use the internet for a various number of reasons.

Looking at this stats above you’ll notice that keeping in touch with family and friends actually ranks higher than every other form of usage in Africa but we also notice a whooping 46% of Africans who use purchase stuff online. I wonder what the numbers were in 2001.

Businesses who do not offer mobile payment options in this day will only be shooting itself in the foot as it will stifle the activities of consumers, plus these mobile apps have found a way to integrate itself with the daily lifestyle of Africans, so you had better jump on board before this ship sails.

What everyone wants is to have that feeling of being larger than life. You want to feel like the Undertaker when walking into a room, lights goof and the mood kicks in. ok well, that’s a little too much but the thing is, you want to have some presence, command some level of respect but how are you going to do that if you are still riding on trends of yesterday.

You know what let me bring you up to speed, you can thank me after you have read episode 1, 2, 3 and the end of this piece (episode 4 of our Youniverse series- the leaping frog)

Welcome back!

Now that you have read those articles, I am sure you now understand what it means live in Youniverse –sing your own song as loudly as you choose (the mindset that’s reshaping business), be super –understanding the power that shapes the future is you, the merger –if you want to be big you need others, and now the leaping frog –the power of flight. At this point I would have loved to quote a law I learnt in physics but I can’t remember it now.

You should know that businesses today are adopting the trend of merging with other businesses in order to take the leap; that is, deliver huge value to their clientele.

There’s only so much you can do on your own, the future is in partnership.

If you have been logged on to our page for the past couple of days you must have noticed our Youniverse series and this is the 3rd episode. You may not already know by now where this is going but by the time the last episode is released, the perfect picture would have been painted in your mind. The first episode talked about the U-Story, how in your world you sing your own song –You-Ni-Verse and how brands have taken advantage of this perspective, and the second episode talks about you being super- owning your identity, now episode 3 –the collabo.

Like a song, you must have first put the beat and theme together –Youniverse, then you put your personality into whatever it is your doing –be super, and then you move on to collaborating with others. One can only do so much by himself but with a few good men you can take the world.

This is a trend that’s being adopted everywhere, for instance, very recently Shazam joined forces with Apple, Facebook took ownership of Instagram and WhatsApp, banks in Africa are consolidating efforts, these are all in a view to deliver value and make global impact. It’s not enough to stand on stage to sing your best song (live your best life) and be amazing, you ought to make global impact.

In Africa, everyone is seemingly gunning to become their own boss; this trend is seen mainly among millennials as we constantly see the rise of entrepreneurs every now and then. This result to having small businesses here and there which add little or no value but imagine what 4 or 5 small businesses can become if only they join forces and grow together.

Like they say “no one is an island”, we are citizens of the world.

Even smaller businesses have adopted this global perspective, which is why nearly every business has a digital presence through social media and web pages.

What Customers Want

NOBODY WANTS TO BUY JUST A PRODUCT; THEY WANT SOMETHING MORE, THEY WANT TO BUY A PERSONALITY.

If you are a frequent user of this website you would know by now how much we emphasize on the evolution of the modern day consumer. Dynamics are changing to meet the somewhat erratic behavioural patterns of consumers and as a result brand owners and marketers are working tirelessly to be on the same frequency with their consumers otherwise they stand the risk of being obsolete. Truth be told, the drivers that motivated you to purchase products and services a few years ago aren’t the same drivers today.

So it beckons the question, what is it that you look out for when you intend to purchase a product? Do you look out for price, quality, quantity, display, aesthetics, brand or something else? This question is left solely for you to answer. But I would have you know that because brands are working hard to keep you as a loyal customer they have deployed a new strategy, which in my opinion is “tha bomb”!

Brands these days have chosen to make their products of best quality and pocket friendly but beyond that they have chosen to consistently give you an experience. Interestingly there are organizations set up solely for this purpose such as Aurelias Basket, The Lekki Gift Company etc. Customers are no longer comfortable with just buying products; they want to buy an experience, an attitude, something beyond the commodity they take of the shelf. This is why we encourage brands to have a personality irrespective of the products (goods or services) you sell. You may not know it but your customers can see, feel, hear, touch and taste you and they expect to perceive your values or value proposition in everything you do.
