THERE ARE CERTAIN PARAMETERS PEOPLE USE TO EVALUATE WHO THE MOST INFLUENTIAL PERSON IN THE WORLD SHOULD BE. WELL, THE MOST INFLUENTIAL PERSONALITY ISN’T A PERSON, IT’S A CHANNEL – SOCIAL MEDIA

My grandfather told me stories about how he used to communicate with my grandmother. He said he would have to travel miles and miles before he got to the nearest post office to send her a letter that’ll take 2 days to get to her as she lived in a different state. He would also have to wait another 2 days and cover the same distance just to receive her reply. I’m sure a lot of people were obviously faithful because you couldn’t do this with multiple relationships. Fast forward to today, sending messages to people in other countries are seamless and you can get your reply in real time while sitting in your chair and sipping vodka.

This technological advancement has given rise to people who are currently regarded as influencers as their works and personalities are largely accepted across continents and as a result have gotten younger generations to aspire to become like them for example, Wizkid, Burna boy, Mafikizolo, Nasty C, Sarkodie, Ramsey Noah, Dangote, and so on. This however is a huge feat the lot of us would love to attain but would never be able to as influential as the Social Media.

Powered by an incredible number of content and an endless reach across the globe, the influence of social media comes unrivaled. There are several reasons we came to this conclusion and they are:

Commands attention: when was the last time you didn’t visit social media? That you are reading this piece right now is proof that you are amongst approximately 7 billion of us who are currently spending a percentage of their time on social media. According to a Global Web Index 2018 survey, internet users in Africa are now spending an average of 3 hours and 10 minutes per day on social networking and messaging platforms – Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Google+, etc. Anyone commanding that amount of time in terms of attention from you daily obviously got you listening.

Shapes minds and starts and ends movements: every influencer seeks to affect the habits and patterns of human beings. In my opinion, influencers are a living mind controlling device and this the social media gets very well. You cannot deny the fact that you currently have certain values and beliefs that were formed as a result of somethings you observed on social media. Movements like #metoo, #blacklivesmatter, #breakfastisimportant, and so on have affected lives and formed values.

Makes you spend: one reason brands sign on brand ambassadors is because they believe that such partnerships would make you buy in to their brand values and in turn make you channel your spending towards them. Social media does that seamlessly, in Africa, you get to pay heavily for data and yet make countless number of purchases online.

With the growing influence of social media there’s no telling what tomorrow would look like. We’ll probably all be living online because we would all crave for better, quicker, and easier ways of disseminating information.

Someone asked me why I referred to social media as a personality and I told him that it’s because social media is alive. One evidence that something is alive is growth and reproduction.

If you have been logged on to our page for the past couple of days you must have noticed our Youniverse series and this is the 3rd episode. You may not already know by now where this is going but by the time the last episode is released, the perfect picture would have been painted in your mind. The first episode talked about the U-Story, how in your world you sing your own song –You-Ni-Verse and how brands have taken advantage of this perspective, and the second episode talks about you being super- owning your identity, now episode 3 –the collabo.

Like a song, you must have first put the beat and theme together –Youniverse, then you put your personality into whatever it is your doing –be super, and then you move on to collaborating with others. One can only do so much by himself but with a few good men you can take the world.

This is a trend that’s being adopted everywhere, for instance, very recently Shazam joined forces with Apple, Facebook took ownership of Instagram and WhatsApp, banks in Africa are consolidating efforts, these are all in a view to deliver value and make global impact. It’s not enough to stand on stage to sing your best song (live your best life) and be amazing, you ought to make global impact.

In Africa, everyone is seemingly gunning to become their own boss; this trend is seen mainly among millennials as we constantly see the rise of entrepreneurs every now and then. This result to having small businesses here and there which add little or no value but imagine what 4 or 5 small businesses can become if only they join forces and grow together.

Like they say “no one is an island”, we are citizens of the world.

Even smaller businesses have adopted this global perspective, which is why nearly every business has a digital presence through social media and web pages.

What’s up with WhatsApp?

WHATSAPP SET TO LAUNCH NEW FEATURES YOU’D CERTAINLY LOVE

I love social media; there’s always something interesting that comes in every now and then. This is why I actually love to update my apps every single time there is a pop up. We cool like that.

And to demonstrate how interesting social media has become, WhatsApp, the leading chat engine, currently valued at over $442.1 billion and with over 1.5 billion users as of 2017 has now decided to include a couple more features.

According to a report released by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp has decided to include silent mode and vacation mode to the app. According to the revelation Silent Mode is already active on all WhatsApp accounts. With this feature enabled you no longer see how many muted messages you have received whenever you enter the app. However, Vacation Mode is still in the works and will work with archived chats that have also been muted. Currently, when you archive or mute a chat on WhatsApp, you’ll still see the chats when you go back into the app. With Vacation Mode, your archived chats that are muted will remain invisible. This means that, soon, the only time you’ll see your archived conversations is when you actually want to.

So ladies you can now actually really truly mute that stalker that just won’t quit bugging you.

Furthermore, WABetaInfo also hints that WhatsApp is working on developing a Linked Accounts option for Business and standard users; this means that soon you will be able to integrate other social media platforms such as Instagram to your account. How great is that? So turn on your notification because soon you’ll be required to update your app once again.

Travel Therapy

THE WORLD IS A GREAT BIG PLACE AND YOU HAVE GOT TO SEE IT.

Sometimes you wake up and you feel like we are all stuck in some sort of rat race. We are all chasing something and we don’t know what it is. The chase never ends because when you achieve one milestone in life it all just seemingly opens you up to the belief that you can achieve something else and the chase begins again. I guess this is why the world is round and continuously rotating; nothing ever stops, the cravings continue as race is endless. This is why we are recommending a trip, you need to go somewhere.

Every day you break your back working that job only so you can provide for both you and those you care about but trust me, you need a vacation otherwise your body is likely to break down and then you will be forced to take that rest. At this point I want you to close your eyes and imagine yourself on beach in your dream destination, just you under the warm sun with a glass of red wine enjoying the cool ocean breeze after you had just gotten a massage. Now open your eyes, can you feel your body feeling relaxed already? Imagine if you did this for real.

There are a few reason why people travel, some for education, medical complications, celebrations (parties and events), adventure, self-discovery, tourism and so many other but I recommend traveling as a form of therapy. Therapeutic traveling relaxes and rejuvenates you. You will return to that rat race you’ve been stuck in for so long with fresh fire power. So go sky diving, bungee jumping, skinny dipping, just do something.

I once saw a man’s bucket list one time and I was astonished by the places he wanted to go and the things he wanted to do. At the end of the list he wrote “the world is a big beautiful place and I must see it”.

Although in Africa presently there’s been a spike in the number of people jetting out to other countries and that’s in a view to find better jobs for them to take care of pressing needs. That’s ok, but make up your mind that whenever you travel for whatever reason ensure you get the therapeutic part of it.

Absa believes that Africa is so much more than a beautifully shaped continent, a trendy tattoo or a travel dream. Africa still has an untold story – the story of our inimitable spirit, our true sense of belonging and born-with-it tenacity. It claims #AfricaEmoji is the start of a new narrative - the one told by us as Africans, Bizcommunity.

However, this beautiful tale was just give a lifespan of 3months and it is set to be taken offline on the 28th of October and as a result Absa is inviting everyone everywhere to join in on the virtual march on Unicode to keep this emoji as permanent inclusion to our social media space.

To join the Virtual March, all you have to do is tweet #AfricaEmoji @Unicode.
