It seems like the entire west is beginning to look beyond their immediate environment and towards Africa. This is seen across many fields, from music to arts to culture to tech. The future clearly is Africa. Africa cannot be mentioned without its giant, Nigeria appearing on scene. Just recently one of the greatest performers of our time, Beyonce had a baby shower which was African themed, many have brought the party’s theme home to the Yoruba land of the Nigerian people.

Today, there seems to be a sudden obsession with the African culture across continents. Africa is known for her vibrant, energetic, zesty culture, bursting with colours and life. Thankfully, the internet is making the world a global village and this is making culture export even easier then ever. This is has been one Nigerian designer’s selling point - Meet Amaka Osakwe.

Amaka Osakwe and her Maki Oh Magic

Amaka Osakwe, is the founder of the Nigerian clothing brand, Maki Oh . Her brand has stood out among fellow Nigerian brands. Amaka’s Maki Oh designs have been seen on high-profile women away from her country home Nigeria. Lupita Nyong’o, Solange, Issa Rae, Michelle Obama and Just recently Lady Gaga have been seen sporting some colourful Maki Oh designs. The designer has said one of her major goals is to let designs speak for themselves by giving them remarkable stories and letting them make the right statements. Her designs ar e unique even as they tell daily stories; stories of Nigeria, of Africa, of Women Empowerment, of colours of the wild, of people and culture. One of the cultures Maki Oh has projected to the world is the slow dying Yoruba adire culture. Adire which is a local tie and dye art of the ancient Yoruba people seems to be dying off in today’s Nigeria but Amaka in her quest to preserve and export the Nigerian Culture has infused this into most of her designs, one of which was recently spotted on the American Pop artiste Lady gaga.
