Don Jazzy: Building Empires, from Mo Hits to Mavins

There are kingdoms and there are empires, Michael Collins Ajereh popularly known as Don Jazzy, the Chairman and CEO of Mavin Records has built from scratch empires that Africa cannot ignore. Don Jazzy, the name behind many enviable awards, many notable hits and the success of a list of top talents in the Nigerian Music industry is by himself a Music producer, singer-songwriter and musician.

Born in Agejunle in Lagos Nigeria, Don Jazzy picked his love for music at a young age, playing the bass guitar and a bit of local African drums. The led to his later delve into Music Production. It cannot be argued that whatsoever the Don touches turns to gold. Right in our very eyes we watched Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo aka D’banj move from a person to a Global Pop icon with a huge part of his success credited to Don Jazzy. In 2004, the both, D’banj and Don Jazzy formed Mo’ Hits records, which revolutionized the Nigerian Music Sound.

After D'banj and Don Jazzy split in 2012, Don Jazzy has replicated similar remarkable success with other artistes under his remit, proving that his craft was no fluke. Beyond D’banj, there wasWande Coal, Dr. SID, the once underrated D’Prince, who are all enjoying top status in the Nigerian Music Industry owing to their Talent and Don Jazzy’s hard work. Today, Don Jazzy's Mavin records has built Tiwa Savage alongside the new generation sensations under the label; Korede Bello, D’ija, and Reekado Banks. One can think Don Jazzy to be the Kenny Ogungbe of our time. Also in many ways, Mr Jazzy has been looked at as the Dr Dre of the Nigerian Music industry, as he silently and continuously makes kings out of mere artistes. With a zesty personality, Don Jazzy, who ordinarily would be just a masked producer, hiding behind the studios and making beats has built himself fans and even followers contributing to the general success of his label members.

Mo’ Hits Records and its successor label, Mavin Records, arguably stands as the only label(s) in country who have given Nigerians at least one power hit every quarter of every year. Don Jazzy, has been known to possess heavy insight as regards choosing his work affiliations and this indeed plays a key role in the overall success of his team. Today, Olamide’s YBNL may be following up speedily to reproducing this feat, but Don Jazzy still stands as a fore runner. From Mo’ Hits to Mavins, Don Jazzy plays a major role in Music Production, background vocal other sound experimentation of his artistes.

Mavins Vs The Others

Many labels have come and gone but Don Jazzy’s Mo’Hits turned Mavins have remained through the storms. ELDee’s Trybe 2.0 Records which was set up at about the same time as Don Jazzy’s Mo’ Hits has slept off into oblivion, with Eva, Shayman, Sarz, Aramide and K9, leaving the label. EME, like Knighthouse before it, did stay relevant but not so long after Mo’Cheddah and Wizkid left the label. Chocolate City which also came to be a while later shook the industry a bit but has not been able to stand as tall as Jazzy’s Marvins. Today, Mavins record. This goes to prove that Don Jazzy is doing something right and we might need to pay closer attention to what exactly it is.

Don Jazzy has consciously built himself an endearing image and always goes on to wipe up publicly any possible tarnish, from making peace with the former partnerD’Banj to Settling the post 2015 Headies feud with Olamide. Don Jazzy has sold himself as more than the average behind the studio music producer, he has enjoyed brand endorsement deals from brands like Samsung, Loya Milk, Johnny Walker etc.
